Some of you may be asking, “What is NLI?” NLI, short for Next Level Innovations, is a multi-year, 3 phase journey covered in prayer and focused on moving a church from Good to GREAT. St. Mark’s UMC has been chosen by the District to participate in NLI because of our health, coachable leadership, and desire to build on what God is doing. We have committed to daily prayer, leadership training, and a process of sharing and listening that will hold a mirror up to our church and provide 3-5 innovations or next faithful steps for our church to consider next fall 2019.

We are still very early on this journey, but here are already some ways that you can get involved:

  • Pray! Prayer is the foundation and backbone of this entire initiative.

We hope you will pray our NLI Breakthrough Prayer every day, at 10:10 (a.m. or p.m.) This time is selected from John 10:10, which states, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Here is the Breakthrough prayer:

Dear God, may your Holy Spirit fall on us like a mighty rushing wind, opening our eyes to see the wonders you are already doing in our church and community. Remove our current limitations that prevent us from being the Church that you desire us to be. Fill our hearts with awe, like the first disciples. Help us discern the work that you are calling us to do so that we can be the Church to all people. AMEN. (based on Acts 2)

Additionally, there is a workshop on Breakthrough Prayer this month on Tuesday, Oct 30.  We have been invited to bring laity to this workshop led by Sue Nilson Kibbey, writer of Flood Gates: Holy Momentum for a Fearless Church, (10 am – 3:30 pm at Oak Grove UMC in Chesapeake). We are enlisting our group to attend, and would love for you to join us. If you are interested, contact Karyn Kimball

  • Have a chat with one of our NLI Team members.

We are on an exciting adventure and happy to share more. NLI Team members are: Fran Cooper, Hannah Hopper (Communications), Karyn Kimball (Prayer Leader), Betty Schiele, Ron Flournoy, Kristen Blome, Rick Wingen, Lynne Kelly, Joseph Wetzel, Laura Godwin, Eric Linders.

Communications will be continuing throughout this process. Stay tuned for further updates and ways to support this effort, and don’t forget: pray & pray some more! As always, we are grateful to our faithful St. Mark’s family as we work together to fulfill God’s dreams for the church, community and world.
