The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law ensuring that children and youth experiencing homelessness have access to a free, appropriate public education.
We currently have two closets: one at Harrowgate Elementary School and one at Falling Creek Elementary School. We provide food for the students' families and snacks for the students who do not have one.
We have also provided Christmas gifts, coats, bathing suits, underwear, and clothing.
The CIS (Community in Schools) Coordinators facilitate the closets and work with us to keep them full.
We have provided furniture and other household goods to MV. We are currently collecting books for them and they were the impetus for the resource closets.
Currently we primarily work with them on the Rent Security Deposit Program. St Mark's helps homeless families move into stable housing by assisting with their security deposit needs. St Mark's has partnered with 13 area churches to provide this financial assistance.
McKinney Vento team does the vetting before referring a family to St Mark's.
